Greenhouse Ambassador Program Details

Applications are now closed for 2025.

Participants from Western Environment Centre and Association for New Canadians are eligible to apply. Ten participants from each organization will be chosen to participate for a 12-month term (January - December 2025).

Each garden group will work together to plan, design and maintain a shared growing space in the dome, to coordinate meetings for the group, and to communicate regularly throughout the season.

    1. Learning about the dome greenhouse design and its systems

    2. Learning about and using natural gardening methods

    3. Responsibility for one of the 5 different jobs in the greenhouse (details below)

    4. Attending a minimum of 2 educational sessions about gardening

    5. Attending and participating in regular meetings and group decision making

    6. Working with a small group to design, plan and maintain garden space

    7. General garden maintenance such as watering, weeding, pest management, fertilizing, planting, pruning, harvesting, and so on

    8. Communicating regularly with group members

    9. Providing feedback to WEC on the program when requested

    10. Purchasing garden materials that go above and beyond what WEC can provide

    11. Helping with winter maintenance (if needed)

    12. Giving small tours of the dome to the general public (if needed)

    1. Access to shared gardening space to grow food for non-commercial purposes

    2. Access to educational resources including workshops, manuals and others

    3. Access to some gardening materials (seeds, tools, water, soil amendments)

    1. Organizing first 1-2 orientation meetings for garden groups, plus additional meetings if required

    2. Providing garden materials, when possible

    3. Organizing gardening workshops and trainings

    4. Assisting with group communication

    5. Providing troubleshooting and advice

    6. Maintaining all major dome infrastructure (greenhouse, shed, composters, etc.)

    7. Creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive and accessible working environment

Ambassador Positions

    1. Organizes and chairs all meetings of the group

    2. Ensures notes are taken, distributed and then saved

    3. Coordinates a communication channel for the group

    4. Makes sure everyone has access to gardening schedules and information about events and workshops

    5. Communicates updates regularly to WEC staff

    6. Helps resolve any conflicts that arise

    7. Helps do research and find answers to gardening questions as needed

    1. Creates a watering schedule for the group

    2. Monitors the plants to ensure adequate water supply

    3. Communicates to the group about the garden’s water needs

    4. Monitors the amount of water in the water tank, and fills it as needed

    1. Coordinates the designing and planning of the garden

    2. Leads the discussion on what the group will plant and how it will be planted

    3. Responsible for ensuring the garden is maintained well, including creating a plan for the group to fertilize, weed, prune, harvest, etc.

    1. Ensures continuous monitoring for pests and issues of all kinds in the greenhouse including insects, mildew, invasive plants or others

    2. Researches solutions to these issues, and communicates them to the group.

    3. Coordinates the use of any pest management products

    4. Ensures all gardeners know and understand the pest management system in the greenhouse

    1. Ensures the shed, tools, composters, data monitoring system, and other infrastructure are well maintained and tidy

    2. Monitors and maintains the compost bins regularly

    3. Coordinates harvesting of finished compost for use in the greenhouse

    4. Ensures all tools are well maintained, cleaned and put away properly

    5. Responsible for paying attention to the data system in the greenhouse that monitors humidity, heat, and other information, and troubleshooting any issues that arise
