What is a Community Greenhouse?

A shared community space to grow food together

A place to hold public events such as workshops, garden parties, and more

An opportunity to showcase environmentally friendly growing methods

What’s the community greenhouse project?

  1. Development of a dome shaped community greenhouse in downtown Corner Brook that will be available for community groups to use to grow food

  2. Building a new community greenhouse for Vine Place

  3. Improving the school greenhouse at Immaculate Heart of Mary School

  4. Connecting these groups to work together and share resources

Project Goals

Increase access to community food infrastructure and programs, particularly for specific populations (new Canadians, lower income neighbourhoods and students)

Provide education to help people develop food skills and to better understand the connection between food and the environment

Increase the overall sustainability of our local food system by connecting groups doing food work, and potentially providing a revenue source for WEC as a social enterprise

Building WEC’s Dome Greenhouse

Construction of WEC’s dome greenhouse began in spring 2023 and will be completed by spring 2024.

Want to know more about the Dome itself?

It’s a large 33’ diameter geodesic growing dome, manufactured by Arctic Acres. The main features of the growing dome structure include:

  • Geodesic wooden frame

  • Polycarbonate greenhouse panels

  • Reflective insulation on the north wall

  • Above ground pond

  • Solar powered intake and exhaust fans

  • Interior raised beds

The dome will be a 3- (or possibly 4-) season functional greenhouse.

How will it work?

Garden beds in the dome greenhouse will be rented out to community groups to grow food for themselves, neighbours, and friends. All materials will be provided including seeds, seedlings, compost, tools and more!

We will offer gardening workshops and the Dome will also be available for workshops, tours, and other events.
